HERRELL'S - WHO ARE WE? |
 |
Some of you know us as the only Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt with which
STEVE Herrell is associated. STEVE Herrell is the ice cream guru who
started out under his first name in Somerville in 1973 and revolutionized
ice cream by making high quality homemade ice cream and inventing
Smoosh-ins (called Mix-ins back then). He sold that business in 1977 and
has had no relationship with it since he started Herrell's. If you're
lucky, you may see him in person during his visits to our stores.
Ancient history aside, since our 1980 start, Herrell's has been praised by
the ice cream world. We have won the Best of BOSTON award for 1983, 1985,
1988,1990,1991,1993,1994 and1996. Channel 4 has selected our Malted
Vanilla as the best ice cream in Boston. People Magazine selected our
Creme de Cocoa as one of the top ten ice creams in the country. We have
been featured in newspaper and magazine articles across the country (Boston
Globe, Boston Herald, Boston Phoenix, Washington Post, New Yorker,
Seventeen, New York Times, Time, Yankee, etc.). Recently, our Vanilla came
in 1st place in a national taste test.; We were called "a mecca for
ice-cream lovers" by Newsweek in a 1989 article about Steve. The Boston
Globe praised us for the Best Frozen Yogurt Flavor in a 1991 CALENDAR Best
Bet, and for Pumpkin Ice Cream on 11/93.
We use only the finest ingredients available to make the best Ice Cream and
Frozen Yogurt (both hard and soft) we can. Our ice cream has very little
air content (unlike most store brands which can be half air) and is thus
very rich. It is made in Boston in very small batches using the original
recipes from 1973 (no longer used by anyone else) along with some unique
new ones developed by Steve Herrell. All of our flavorings are pure and
natural. In Banana, for example, we use real bananas. We never use food
coloring. Our hot fudge and whipped cream are also made from "scratch".
In addition to Ice Cream, we offer Homemade Frozen Yogurt (12 Flavors at a
time), Sorbet and NO-MOO non dairy dessert. Whether you're a chocoholic
(Chocolate Pudding, hot fudge and chocolate whipped cream), a coffeeholic
(Espresso) or just an ice cream or frozen yogurt lover, there's something
for you at Herrell's.
Our parlors are only in Massachusetts - four are in the Boston area and one
is in Northampton. We do not sell to supermarkets although you may see our
handmade Bon Bons, handpacked quarts and pints, and hot fudge in area
specialty stores. Some fine restaurants and caterers also serve our
products. The Allston store is now open from 7 a.m. serving coffee and
breakfast with a full service espresso bar.

AMANDA'S BANANA STORY |
 |
Once there was a little girl named AMANDA. She had beautiful curly auburn
hair and the cutest freckles imaginable. As she grew up, there were two
things that were obvious about AMANDA to even the most casual observer.
Number one was that she loved animals. She loved animals so much that she
became a vegetarian when she was only 12. Secondly, was that she hated Bananas. She couldn't stay in the same room as a peeled banana. The
smell, the taste, and eventually even the image of a banana was impossible
for her to deal with.
What were her parents to do? They both loved bananas and were tired of
hiding them in the oven. They had to wait for AMANDA to go to school
before they could sneak out and slice a banana for their morning cereal or
flapjacks. Could they ever openly enjoy bananas in AMANDA's presence?
Her father came up with a plan. He owned a well-known homemade ice cream
and frozen yogurt parlor in Allston called HERRELL'S. He had developed
other frozen desserts for restaurants (Handmade Ice Cream Bon Bons for
Legal Seafoods for example) and decided to make a frozen dessert named for
his daughter. After lots of experimentation, his creation was revealed.
He had a package designed featuring a cartoon image of AMANDA. Inside the
package was the most scrumptious (if you like bananas) fruit treat you
could imagine: a real banana, ripened to perfection, hand dipped in the
finest milk chocolate and rolled in fresh roasted peanuts. Yum!!!
Well, today AMANDA'S BANANAS are available in lots of places, including
the West Newton and Coolidge Corner Theaters, and Legal Seafoods
marketplaces to name a few. Of course, the Herrell's Renaissance Café in
Allston sells them, too. They have real appeal. (bad pun.) Sometimes,
instead of on a stick, they are made in bite-sized pieces, like a bon bon.
So, what about AMANDA? Does she now love bananas as much as she loves
animals? Unfortunately not. But, her parents no longer have to hide their
bananas, and she loves to tell everyone that she's the real AMANDA on the
package.

HERRELL'S HOMEMADE HOT FUDGE |
 |
When STEVE HERRELL set out to develop a homemade hot fudge, he put the same
effort into the taste and texture as he put into his famous award winning
ice cream (Best of BOSTON 8 times - including 1996). This recipe has been
freshly prepared in small batches and served at Herrell's since the
beginning (1980).
Now Herrell's Homemade Hot Fudge has a life of its own. We think you will
agree that there is just the right amount of bitter-sweet chocolatiness
that is the ultimate compliment to any ice cream (even if it isn't
Herrell's - perish the thought !!)
Of course you can obtain this ambrosia at any Herrell's by the ladle or
more. But, now it is available at your local gourmet store in a unique
"overflowing" 10 ounce jar. The lid coating even smells like chocolate!!!
Prepared in small batches using the original recipe, and bottled while
still hot, no preservatives are used to change the taste in any way. It's
always on a sundae for Herrell's Homemade Hot Fudge.
